A lot of people have speculated about the sexuality of Dave Moffatt. And as much as I like to say that his personal life should be left private, I know that will never happen. Thus I find myself once again reiterating what I've said before: he's still the same person.

It was pretty clear early on that Dave was "different." That was the most common term used by his brothers to describe him. Fans also noticed pecular things like his sub-par interet in sports when compard to his brothers. As a child, Dave preferred playing with girls and would even idenitfy pink as his favorite color. These things may or may not be early indicators of sexual preference, but it is clear that there was something "different" about Dave.

The story might end there, but in fact it doesn't. Being a young teen heart-throb, there must have been an immense amount of pressure. All the little girlies had their fantasies, and the record label had an image to project. Unfortunately for Dave, his private life isn't as private as it should have been. There seemed to be some kind of a hang-up as if his personal struggles were meant for public scrutiny.

The Moffatts split up and serious rumors began surfacing in 2003. In October 2004, an article published by Swerve (Winnipeg's monthly queer newsmagazin) confirmed the rumor to be true. Dave's sexuality is now common knowledge, yet it still ends up discussed and debated. Why it is such a big deal to other people I will never know. Perhaps jus the shock of finding this out overwhelms fans.

An unforunate side effect of this has been Dave being blamed for ruining The Moffatts. After all, his father did not speak to him for a year after coming out. But the truth of the matter is that the band was over with or without his revelation. There were many reasons for the split, and one of the contributing factors was definitely Dave's sexuality. But on the grand scheme of things, the brothers wanted to break loose, they wanted freedom, they wanted normal lives. They were young, and constantly evolving. There's no way they could have kept up the pace. The biggest cause for the split: they wanted different things. Even just in terms of style of music they vary greatly. Listen to something by The Boston Post, followed by Same Same, followed by Your Smile... completely different directions.

So what does it matter? It doesn't. Dave's personal choices are his own. He is still the same person, although much happier than he was before. Why this is continually an issue for people I'll never know. I'm happy for Dave and the courage he showed. He has had long-term relationships and seems to have found happiness. That's all I have ever wanted for him.
